Department: Engineering

As part of a multidisciplinary team the Engineer will have responsibility for design and development of equipment across the product range. This may include, but not be limited to, concept design, prototyping, detailed design, iteration and validation of components and assemblies. The post holder will primarily be managing day to day activities and providing guidance to members within the manufacturing and engineering teams on the manufacturing processes required to produce internally manufactured parts, whilst supporting the operations team with information to enable components to be scheduled and expedited in line with company expectation. The post holder will also be required to work alongside multiple departments and be capable of understanding business systems to drive efficiency improvements and projects throughout the company.

In addition to this, they will be required to ensure that all Engineering and Manufacturing Order documentation for internal and external use has been technically reviewed and are available to the relevant people.

 

General

  • Lead and participate in team meetings, recording necessary actions and being responsible for any follow up required
  • Support purchasing, manufacturing, commercial and sales in non-contract queries and process improvements as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team.
  • Contribute to and create regular progress reports and present them to project leaders & management
  • Resolves and/or escalates issues in a timely fashion
  • Follow all company procedures and Health and Safety policies
  • Review and sign off of part/assembly/GA drawings/technical documentation and designs
  • Actively review and drive process and product improvements to elevate the team
  • Support colleagues to ensure manufacturing order specific documentation (programs, tool sheets, quality plans) and product structures are compiled, reviewed, and completed for the relevant target dates.
  • Make technical decisions for manufacturing processes that are either running or scheduled to run.
  • Supporting Production, Fabrication, Quality and Purchasing Departments within the normal course of business.
  • Ensure all items that are supplied on Manufacturing Orders comply with specification.
  • Provide intuitive resolutions to manufacturing engineering technical challenges
  • Investigate manufacturing and fabrication problems or failures and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor and manage equipment quality and maintenance (breakdown investigations, scheduling maintenance visits etc).
  • Observe and support the company health and safety policy and promptly report any concerns or incidents.
  • Attend training courses (both on and off-site) where necessary for personal and skills development.

 

Contract Processing

  • Generation of CAD models, detail drawings, assembly and fabrication drawings, arrangement drawings, parts lists, specifications, and contract documentation for contracts from point of handover from sales to providing ordering information to purchasing.
  • Design safe, compliant, and cost-effective equipment to fulfil the customer’s requirements, and generate the necessary documentation and drawings for its manufacture.
  • Oversee the progress of part delivery, fabrication, and assembly of contracts you are responsible for.
  • Create documentation and drawings for non-standard contract manuals and certification.
  • Review and complete order handovers to ensure smooth transition through the department

 

Product Development

  • Investigate and raise areas of interest within current product range for development and potential improvement
  • Investigate equipment and product problems or failures both during testing or during use and design and implement solutions
  • Generate, develop, and test product improvements and new product designs through from concept to production, including the generation of all documentation, drawings, and sales support where required.
  • Conduct and devise testing protocols on new and existing equipment.
  • Produce clear, detailed and logical test reports, for both internal and external distribution.
  • Lead major development and new product design and release through NPD process

 

Manufacturing & Fabrication Order Processing

  • Generate CAD models, manufacturing and fabrication process drawings, setup instructions, tool sheets, gauge packs and other documentation where required for processing orders from point of handover from Project Engineering and Production.
  • Occasional peer review of technical documentation and designs.
  • Design safe, compliant, and cost-effective products and manufacturing processes.
  • Generate and offer a technical review of the necessary documentation and drawings for manufacture and fabrication.
  • Support Production, Fabrication, Quality, Sales and Purchasing teams in bespoke queries and process improvements as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team.

 

Quality Assurance

  • Use quality procedures (including ECR/ECNs), to document and implement quality and performance improvements.
  • Review & sign off of ECNs and changes throughout the business, working alongside other departments to ensure change plan is completed.
  • Liaise with Quality & Support departments to ensure issues are tracked and logged appropriately and customer issues are resolved within a reasonable time frame.
  • Logically approach customer returns/issues and documents accurately.
  • Identify the cause of and propose solutions to quality concerns/issues.
  • ·  Ability to review and ensure products are compliant with relative standards (e.g. ASME, OSHA).
  • Participate in department & company audits.
  • Review and sign off quality documents relating to engineering.
  • Logically approach manufacturing and fabrication quality issues and document accurately.
  • Identify the cause of issues and propose solutions to quality concerns.
  • Use quality procedures (including ECR/ECN/ECC/Non-Conformance), to document and implement quality and performance improvements.
  • Assist Quality Engineer to provide and interpret inspection reports and assure that relevant issues/concerns can be closed out in a timely manner.

 

Process Development/ R&D

  • Generate, develop, and test process improvements through from concept to production, including the generation of all documentation, fixturing, tool & gauging packs, drawings, and manufacturing support where required.
  • Conduct and devise manufacturing and fabrication strategies on new and existing components and assemblies.
  • Investigate and develop inspection processes with the Quality Engineer to expand inspection capabilities and efficiencies.
  • Produce clear, detailed, and logical reports where required, for both internal and external distribution.
  • Perform/arrange third party risk assessments, where appropriate, for any non-standard manufacturing activities.

Skills & Experience

  • A good understanding of CAD modelling and drawing skills and experience with some knowledge of plastic machining, welding and fabrication as well as geometric tolerancing.
  • Ability to interpret and understand technical drawings.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Good customer and supplier communication ability.
  • Effective listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem solving and fault-finding ability.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and the ability to work using his/her own initiative.
  • 3+ years in related job role (i.e. Design Engineer).
  • Project managed 2-3 substantial projects from start to finish (i.e. new product launch) independently, or with very little guidance.
  • A thorough understanding of engineering principles and experience of component manufacture fabrication and design, with experience within plastics manufacturing desirable.
  • A thorough understanding of CAD modelling and CAM programming.
  • A good understanding of Fanuc control systems with experience of multi-axis CNC turning and milling.
  • Strong problem solving and fault-finding ability.
  • Effective listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Team management skills – considering workload, task allocation, deadlines, priorities etc.
  • Good customer and supplier communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of the companies MRP software.

 

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified or equivalent in a relevant mechanical engineering discipline, preferably in manufacturing engineering.
  • Not essential but preferred – experience working within manufacturing engineering of fabricated plastic assemblies and/or CNC machined products.
